Background of the Study
Urban Pidgin in Lagos has emerged as a dynamic form of street language that reflects the city’s multicultural vibrancy and rapid socio-economic change. Phonological processes in this context—such as vowel reduction, assimilation, elision, and intonation shifts—play a pivotal role in shaping identity and facilitating communication among diverse speakers (Adebayo, 2023). This study explores how these phonological features are adapted in everyday speech and how they contribute to the distinctiveness of Urban Pidgin. By analyzing spontaneous interactions in street settings and market environments, the research seeks to document systematic phonological patterns and variations that distinguish Urban Pidgin from its more formal counterparts. The study also examines the influence of contact with standard English, local languages, and global media on these phonological processes (Oluwaseun, 2024). Furthermore, it investigates whether these processes serve social functions, such as establishing in-group solidarity or signaling informality. Employing acoustic analysis alongside sociolinguistic interviews, the study integrates quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a comprehensive appraisal of phonetic adjustments and stress-timing in Urban Pidgin. The findings are expected to contribute to the broader understanding of language change under urban pressures, while also offering insights into the cultural and communicative dynamics at play in one of Africa’s most bustling metropolises (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite Urban Pidgin’s prominence in Lagos street language, there is a scarcity of systematic research on its underlying phonological processes. Existing studies often generalize about the language without in-depth phonetic analyses, leaving gaps in understanding the specific alterations—such as stress patterns and segmental variations—that define this speech form (Adebayo, 2023). This oversight limits our ability to appreciate how such processes contribute to both identity formation and effective communication in informal settings. Moreover, rapid urbanization and media exposure may be accelerating phonetic change, yet the impact on intelligibility and cultural continuity remains underexplored (Oluwaseun, 2024). This study aims to fill these gaps by providing a detailed examination of phonological adaptations in Urban Pidgin, offering data that can inform both linguistic theory and practical applications in language education and preservation (Eze, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To document key phonological processes in Urban Pidgin spoken in Lagos.

  2. To analyze the social functions and communicative roles of these processes.

  3. To propose implications for language planning and cultural preservation.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the dominant phonological processes in Urban Pidgin?

  2. How do these processes affect communication among urban speakers?

  3. In what ways do external influences shape these phonological features?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the intricate phonological dynamics of Urban Pidgin, a language that embodies the cultural vibrancy of Lagos. By documenting and analyzing these processes, the research enhances our understanding of urban linguistic innovation and informs strategies for preserving linguistic diversity. The findings will be valuable for sociolinguists, educators, and policymakers seeking to integrate informal speech patterns into broader language planning initiatives (Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses exclusively on phonological processes in Urban Pidgin in Lagos street contexts. It does not cover other varieties of Nigerian Pidgin or formal language registers.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Phonological Processes: Systematic sound changes affecting pronunciation.

  • Urban Pidgin: A creole-based street language used in urban settings.

  • Intonation: The variation in pitch during speech.
